Makes its
best growth on moist loam or alluvial soils, and although found
on many different sites, it is typical of stream banks, lakeshores
and adjacent slopes. One of the most tolerant spruces as it
withstands wind, heat, cold, drought and crowding; best in full
sun but tolerant of some shade. |

Tree with
rows of horizontal branches forming a conical crown; smaller
and shrubby at the tree line. Useful as a specimen, mass, hedge,
windbreak; widely used in the plains states due to its adaptability. |

Characteristics: |
Needles
although pointed, are much softer to the touch than that of
Picea pungens. In addition, the cones are smaller and have a
clipped off appearance on the tips. Very salt tolerant. Various
kinds of wildlife, including deer, rabbits and grouse browse
spruce foliage in winter. |
